The team at the Specialty Materials plant in Canton, New York, gave 100 percent to a recent project, and in turn, is now using 100 percent LED lighting at the plant.

“LED lighting was installed to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs,” said Pete Chambers, senior facilities technician and site energy manager with the Global Energy Management (GEM) team. “It’s a bonus that we can now say we’re 100 percent LED.”

Pete led the project team made up of the plant manager, and employees from facilities, engineering, and Environmental, Health, & Safety. Together, they completed the steps to 100 percent LED:

  • Conducted a plant survey to identify existing light levels and fixture types
  • Documented the hours of use and projected energy savings per fixture
  • Wrote project scope and secured funding from the division and GEM
  • Purchased and installed LED lamps, fixtures, and dimmers

The project received partial funding from GEM, as well as an incentive from the local utility worth more than a third of the project cost. The new LED fixtures are saving enough electricity to power more than 100 homes for a year.
