What’s a science-based career like?
Students from the Nashua High School North Honors Biotechnology Program now have a better idea after meeting with, and learning from, employees at Corning Life Science’s Headquarters in Tewksbury, Massachusetts.
Students had the opportunity to learn about science-based, technical careers in a day-long visit to the Corning facility that included a “Life Sciences 101” presentation from CLS Vice President and General Manager Richard Eglen.
The day also provided CLS with the opportunity to share Corning's innovations and new product developments with students, who perhaps hadn't considered the impact that product manufacturing could have.
And, students were told about careers related to science that don’t necessarily focus on chemistry, biology, physics and the like. Careers like marketing, product line management, procurement, or engineering, the support a science-based business are vital and help broaden the appeal of the sector.
"My advice is to look around and really listen—you may be surprised by where you end up and how you find your true passion," Jacki Barnett, a district sales manager for CLS, told students.
Career Exploration Day is a component of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation, which provides lab-based training in biotechnology to 150 public high school science teachers each year, along with funds to public schools for lab supplies and equipment.
